Launched in 1979 by the storied Bowers & Wilkins brand, the 800 Series loudspeakers have served as the company’s pinnacle of design for more than three decades. The original Bowers & Wilkins 801 speaker was not only a top-notch product—it was an envelope-pushing creation that helped bring about the modern era of luxury loudspeaker design. Many industry professionals, audiophiles, and discerning listeners from all walks of life have proclaimed that the 800 series has no match. Until now, that is.
After seven years of intense research and development, Bowers & Wilkins has unveiled a new iteration with the 800 Series Diamond. The head-turning lineup features seven models, including one stand-mount, four floor-standers, and two home-theater, center-channel options. However, the most impressive aspect of this update on the classic series is that almost nothing has been carried over from the previous generation. This is truly a new sound, built carefully from the ground up, with the exception of a few tiny parts and Bowers & Wilkins’ high-end diamond tweeter.
Besides the well-regarded diamond tweeter, the 800 Series features a new continuum cone made from composite materials, which replaces the previous Kevlar cone. The swap results in a neutral, open performance and superior acoustic-properties, according to Bowers & Wilkins. Other changes include a solid-body aluminum assembly, interlocking panels that keep the speakers rigid, and a cabinet that features a reverse-wrap design to help improve sonic dispersion and reduce cabinet reflection.
The result of all this fine-tuning is a series that immediately catches the eye. A melding of classic sensibility and modern moxie are on full display, with soft curves and swooping lines serving up a visual feast. And yet, it’s the sound that steals the stage. Refreshingly clear, with abundant depth and surprising dimensionality. Listeners will relish being sucked right into the moment, and setting it free into their home.
