Have you ever experienced sound in the movie theater that makes you feel like you’re really in the scene? The ground shakes with each explosion, birds and planes whoosh overhead, and chatter comes from all sides. Now you can have that experience at home, thanks to Dolby Atmos.
This new multidimensional audio processing system goes beyond surround sound to bring you a life-like immersion into the scene you’re watching.
Before Dolby Atmos, sound had to be mixed together by placing it in various spots in a surround sound system. While dialogue would come from the front speaker, background noise would come from behind and the sides, and so on, creating a matrix to mimic the 4D immersive sound that we hear in real life.
The company’s website explains, “Up to now, cinema sound designers have had to mix independent sounds together into channels for soundtrack creation. If a scene required, say, a helicopter taking off, that sound had to be assigned to an individual channel and mixed together with other sounds. While that helicopter could move across channels, it couldn’t go above you. You wouldn’t hear it as you would in real life.”
Dolby Atmos works with cinema, in the home, and even mobile. For in-home, the system utilizes a sophisticated rendering process to scale to anywhere from seven to 24 speakers, recreating the filmmaker’s original intent. It is compatible for playback on conventional stereo and 5.1 and 7.1-channel systems.
