What could wow a seasoned residential designer like Bill Westrum? This year it was products that present exciting solutions to common design challenges in the home.
The new Seamless-Small Aperture speakers from James Loudspeaker leave a 3” footprint in the ceiling or 4” in the wall. What’s so very sexy about this product is the fact that it blends beautifully with your décor by not only being small in size but by being compatible with lighting trims. That’s what you see. What you don’t see is the powerful base driver hidden in the enclosure giving the speaker a surprising range. This combination is rare, although the speaker is not cheap at $1000 per speaker; we definitely think its well worth the price for a client who absolutely wants to have their cake and eat it too- a camouflage system that SOUNDS GOOD!
Next up is Screen Innovations Black Diamond Stealth. For those unfamiliar with the Black Diamond screen it is very special as it is the only screen that works well in high ambient light. Traditionally, you needed a really dark room to get a good picture from a projector but when the Black Diamond came out it destroyed that notion. However, the difficulty was that it only came in a fixed screen option and many clients prefer motorized screens that go away when not in use. This is particular true in a multifunctional room like a living room. A prototype was shown a couple of years ago but design issues made it not ready to market. The housing and the roll out is sexy and something you have to see to appreciate. This new design is impressive and we should be seeing this hit the market around after the 1st of the year.
Last but not least, Runco releases the LS-100D projector. This projector is already attractive because it is LED which means its virtually maintenance free and energy efficient but the reason it’s impressive is because of its NEAR (Next Generation Extreme Aligned Reflection) which allows for an extremely short through. Imagine a 92” projected image from a projector 18” away! This product is available now and costs $19,995 which makes it a much less expensive option compared to a flat panel in a comparable size.
